What People Should Know About Removal of Mold

Most people know that the problem of mold must be addressed immediately.  If mold is allowed to grow, it can cause more damage and health problems later on.  However, immediate response does not mean undertaking the removal of mold without preparation.  People who wish to solve the problem immediately must still do it the proper way.

There are those who assume that removal of mold can be done by merely spraying moldy surfaces with disinfectants or biocides.  What they do not know is that these do nothing to solve the problem.  Though disinfectants and biocides can kill mold spores, they do not eliminate the allergenic and toxic properties of the fungus.  Dead mold can still put exposed individuals in danger because it still has mycotoxins.  The real solution to the problem is to either remove the mold from the material, or remove the mold-infested material from the house or building.

When it comes to removal of mold, not all moldy items should be discarded.  Some can still be cleaned and dried.  It all depends on what kind of item it is.  Moldy materials which are non-porous (hard plastic, glass, metal) and semi-porous (concrete, plaster, wood) can still be cleaned and dried.  On the other hand, materials which are porous (carpeting, fabric, mattresses, wallpaper) should be disposed immediately.  These things absorb and keep moisture, which means they cannot be completely dried; mold can grow inside and no one would know.

Removal of mold is a task that always requires the use of protective clothing and gear.  These allow individuals to limit their exposure to mold and prevent them from getting sick.  For instance, respiratory protection such as breathing masks are effective in protecting a person from airborne mold spores.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends the use of the N-95 respirator.  Gloves and goggles are also useful in preventing mold from reaching the hands and eyes during clean up.

For the most effective removal of mold, homeowners and property managers must seek the services of a contractor.  The contractor to be hired must have years of experience in cleaning up mold.  A property owner must get only the services of a contractor who really knows what should be done.  If the water damage or mold growth was caused by sewage or other contaminated water, then the contractor to be chosen must have dealt with similar situations in the past.
