Homes are meant to be shared with family and friends, but they are never meant to be shared with molds. Unfortunately, there are countless homes in the country that serve as residence to both humans and fungi. While mold spores are found practically everywhere, when large amounts of mold invade your home it can become a serious issue. Molds become a fixture indoors only when spores land on a moist surface and the fungus starts to grow. Most mold growths occur in dark and damp places, so they are left undetected for a long time.
So what are mold homes made of? What are the warning signs that indicate that there is indeed a mold problem? Take for instance warped wood, which is one sign of molds. Wood, which is naturally flat, is caused to warp by excessive moisture. If the wood materials inside the house have been penetrated with enough water to cause wood warping, then there is a big chance that the level of moisture has caused or accelerated mold growth.
Some mold homes also have cracked and/or peeled paint. The cracking and peeling of paint in the walls of a house can be attributed to a moisture build up behind the paint. By the time the paint peels or cracks, the moisture has probably caused a mold colony to spread within the wall. Paying attention to the drywall tape is a good idea, since its loosening can also be considered as a warning sign. One can be sure that moisture has permeated the wall if the drywall tape loosens.
The staining and discoloration of the walls is probably the most common feature among mold homes. Houses with high levels of moisture reveal yellowish stains on the walls and ceilings. If mold colonies have already grown, the discoloration will have a greenish, brownish or blackish tint to it. Homeowners should know that not all discoloration is mold, though. They would have to consult a mold specialist to determine the cause.
The last and worst warning signs for mold homes is an unpleasant odor. Mold has a pungent smell, one which can be described as ‘musty’ or ‘earthy.’ If the distinct smell becomes prominent only when the HVAC system is running, it is possible that the mold growth is within the HVAC system.
If any of these signs are present in the house, homeowners must immediately seek the services of professionals to properly address the mold problem.
